Wal-Mart is an example to the retail industry of how to properly determine the demands of their market and to react effectively to those demands.
As to the employment market, Wal-Mart is now the largest private employer in the USA (the U.S. Government is #1). So Wal-Mart pretty much sets the standard for the expected pay and benefits for all Americans who are employed in that type of business. If Wal-Mart is not fair with the pay per hour, affordable health care benefits, a pension or 401K plan that can realistically allow their “associates” to have a decent retirement, then other companies in the same business will most likely follow Wal-Mart’s lead.
I think that Wal-Mart is in the perfect position to influence the standard of living for all workers in that same business.
Remember that Wal-Mart runs several businesses; logestics, warehousing, retailing, advertising, etc.
