Search engines not working?

My girlfriend’s laptop is connected to our internet and she is running IE8. Google.com and gmail will not load on her browser (although google maps work). And if she goes to yahoo.com, it loads fine, but when she tries to search it returns with "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage."
Any ideas what would cause this and how to fix it? It just started randomly while she was using her laptop. I’m connected to the same wireless network with no problems.

We downloaded the malwarebytes software and ran it. One infected file was found, which we removed, and then restarted. Still having the same problem unfortunately. Any other ideas?
