SEO newby question! I am adding backlinks (10 per day, 7 sites) & wondered how to know if they were working?

March 10, 2010 on 5:26 am | By advertising | In search engine |

I am a small business owner, and had some web sites that I have owned that were not getting much traffic. I read backlinks were a good cheap way to increase traffic, so I had been adding backlinks to my sites to increase their traffic. Every site I found in my industry with a PR 3 or higher, I was submitting a 1 way link to all 7 of my web sites. I have been doing this for about a week, but I would like to know how to track my efforts better. Any suggestions for a SEO newby do-it-yourselfer?

  1. First, you need to know if you are actually linked by those sites. You can maually check in google by using the following syntax.

    link:www.[your domain].com.

Then you can get your website statistic to see if there is increase traffic from those site. You can also check your google page rank.

  3. In some cases it can take months for your search rank to be credited with some backlinks, Yahoo Site Explorer appears to report all the backlinks it has discovered, unlike big G which in it’s opaque fashion appears to only reveals a few teasers.

For most accurate explorer results, click the links count, select Show Inlinks: "except this site", to: "entire site"

It would be worthwhile to also check the backlinks of the top ranked competition, noting not only the number of links but also their quality and relevance. I was surprised to learn how many top ranked sites don’t have bum marketer style links, like blog comments, but instead paid bloglist inclusions on unrelated sites.
